For all their aesthetic appeal, music videos are liable to harm music (lyrics rather).
But it appears to be a factor which avoiding is proving to be an impossibility.
For a single released, there can be a music video. But let's discern between the importance between mean and ends. Music is music. Music is about the organized rhythm, the high trebles, and the riveting bass lines. It's about the lyrical poetics, the quick wit and sometimes acceptable ebonics - if the beats are right. The guitar solos, the drum solos, the jazz solos, the bass solos; the choir, the voice, backups. This is music, this is sound.
The full potential of the guitar is yet to be unlocked, the full potential of the human vocal chords have yet to be unlocked, and the English language is expanding with every release of the Oxford Dictionary. So why then, do we need monstrosities such as "Auto-tune" and "MTV"? What is auto-tune but a thinly veiled attempt to recreate that which is called singing? Do we live in a time and place where just because humans are so technologically advanced, we allow our flaws to be covered up by mindless instruments? Are we so lazy that it would hurt us so much to organically improve the human body?
What is MTV but a tool that has not only assisted the advancement of music, but a tool that is now becoming the focus of music? It is not uncommon these days to hear more of a music video than a song to which said music video belongs? Again begging the question, are we so lazy that we abuse the opportunity to enhance music by making the music about the video? The beauty of a music video is that it allows a visual aid for one to listen to while one listens to music. So what reason is there but laziness for one to sing about what's happening in the music video? Does the video not speak for itself?
What good is the gift of hearing if there is nothing but widespread drivel tainting the orifices in which the likes of Bach and Chopin once rung so majestically?
